What’s in a Wyrd?

According to Websters the definition of wyrd is:
Noun 1. Wyrd – Fate personified; one of the three Weird Sisters
Synonyms: Weird

So there we have it, fate, karma, destiny – no matter how you phrase it in the end it is all about a journey. Whether one’s journey was defined by the three Parcæ themselves, by one’s deeds in a previous incarnation, or if it was preordained via the Divine we all have a story that unfolds before us. Each day revealing a little more about ourselves, who we are, and how we perceive the life that we lead.

Some say that the course of our lives are completely out of our control, it is what it is and we just need to accept it. We have all heard those idioms where someone’s “fate is sealed” or they “sealed their fate”, “a fate worse than death”, “a twist of fate”, or they were “destined for greatness”, “the die has been cast”. Others would say we control the outcome of our lives, that our free-will determines who and what we are as individuals. There is no one pulling the strings, we “make our own luck” and control what happens at every turn.

Personally, I think it is a little of both. Our lives are made up of individual threads which weave the fabric that becomes our life’s story. Each thread inter-woven, connected with one another.  As we age, like a piece of fabric, our lives can get thread-bare and hopefully patched over time.

As we grow into our lives we must embrace the idea that there are aspects which we cannot control, after all, we cannot control who our  parents are (unless of course you believe in Tibetan teachings in which during the “bardo of the becoming” you can choose your parents – but that is a topic for another time), and then there are those special moments reflected in some of the choices we make – you know, those crossroads in which you get that deja vú feeling – I have been here before but which path do I take?

I believe that it is in these deja vú moments we actually define the direction our lives take until the shuttle of our life’s loom passes again — “warp….weft….warp….weft…” listen to the footsteps of your life as its tapestry is created. At each of these crossroads we are given an opportunity to make course corrections in our lives, to change the color of the threads and make a new pattern in the fabric – put our stamp on our journey.

So, here I have posited a basis for my blog – to chronicle events, ideas, observations, and outcomes from my Wyrd to yours.
